...woman's work....

..here hare here..

I don't know just how good this film is, but for me
there are none better. Grants performance as Withnail
is wonderful and the character of Withnail is so close
to how .............................
You need to watch the film to get the ending, but
the closing scene is heartbreaking . It's still the
only piece of Will S. that I love... here hare here...

Dancing dress

... dearly beloved, we are gathered here today....
'Cause it's pissing down outside....

There's a fat lady sings in a bar I use
There's a guy that brings black dancing shoes
There's a kid that I know with just half an eye
And he holds the hand of a taller guy
There's a dancing dress all out of time
And a Rasta I guess who's words don't rhyme
There's a bugle man who's lips are dry
And a bare-foot priest who says a sigh
And there's a fat lady sings in a bar I use
And there's a guy that brings black dancing shoes
And there's a fat lady sings in a bar I use
And there's a guy that brings black dancing shoes
There's a bugle man who's lips are dry
And a bare foot priest who says a sigh
There's a fat lady sings in a bar I use

Poem 25

.....Twentieth of March..  Derek H.

And so here we are again
Yep it's my birthday today
(Some years it's the last day of winter
Others the first day of spring)
Softening now the grey skies of rain
So close now, so close again
Almost there with each lengthening day
To the green of April, the bright green of May..

..Poem twenty four..

       This Be The Verse...

By Philip Larkin... additional lines by Derek H.

They fuck you up your mom and dad
They may not mean to but they do
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra just for you

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats

Man hands on misery to man
It deepens like a coastal shelf
Get out as early as you can
And don't have any kids yourself.

They fuck you up the kids you had
They may not mean to but they do
Pouring guilt on their mum and dad
Saying you're some-one they never knew

But they'll be fucked up in their turn
By brats who won't wear threadbare coats
Who'll half the time refuse to learn
And half spent filling their throats

Man hands on misery to man
It deepens like a coastal shelf
Get out as early as you can
Return to being a kid yourself.

They fuck you up the dreams you had
They may not seem to but they do
Pouring guilt, good hidden by bad
Drowning in shame as they never flew

But dreams were fucked up long before
By 'Holy' men and men of books
Selling dreams to those unsure
'Cause freedom ain't the prize it looks

Man hands on misery to man
It deepens like a coastal shelf
Get out as early as you can....
But always be a dreamer yourself....

Not sure Philip would approve, but hey, he's dead.

Mary Margaret O'Hara - When You Know Why You're Happy (live)

MARY MARGARET O´HARA Help me lift you up

.. she reminds me so much of Mary Connealy.. (New York Mary)
Must be four years since I last saw her "New York Mary" that is...
she was divorced by then and living alone.. but happy with her
life, sad that I never kept my word and went to see her in NYC, x

Whisky Two

What do you mean? "is he pissed again?"

So picture this, there's me, my Roland Phantom
and an empty whisky bottle, we'd just spent a warm
summers night making music. The sun was up and
the "Dawn chorus" was at an end, so, with both
speakers on number eleven I was dancing round
my cow shed home. The cows had come across the
pasture to have a nose (nosey cows) and I swear
half the herd were tapping their hooves, and the rest
were swaying their heads.. well they are my cult following...
Happy days.

Tom Waits - Time: cover sung by Heidi Talbot [HQ]

.. see it's national POETS day on the third so here's Poem 20..
(eat your heart out Dylan)

Tom Waits... Time........

Well the smart money's on Harlow
And the moon is in the street
And the shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And you're east of East St. Louis
And the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause
And Napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon
His invisible fiancee's in the mirror
And the band is going home
It's raining hammers it's raining nails
And it's true there's nothing left for him down here
And it's time time time
And it's time time time
And it's time time time
That you love
And it's time time time.

And they all pretend they're orphans
And their memory's like a train
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away
And the things you can't remember
Tell the things you can't forget
That history puts a saint in every dream
Well she said she'd stick around
Until the bandages came off
But these mama's boys just don't know when to quit
And Mathilda  asks the sailors
Are those dreams or are those prayers
So close your eyes son and this won't hurt a bit
And it's time time time
And it's time time time
And it's time time time
That you love
And it's time time time.

Well things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl
The boys just dive right off their cars
And splash into the street
And when they're on a roll  she pulls a razor
From her boots and a thousand pigeons fall around her feet
So put a candle in the window
And a kiss upon his lips
Till the dish outside the window fills with rain
Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart
And pay the fiddler off 'till I come back again
And it's time time time
And it's time time time
And it's time time time
That you love
And it's time time time...

Tom Waits - Martha (album version)

I'm sure many of us have a "Martha" and have never made the call,
but then you can't dial-up the past, it isn't there anymore, but...
'I remember quiet evenings trembling close to you..'

Beethoven: Quartet in A minor for Strings, Op. 132, Movement III.

Sometime about 1991 my sister was living in a small flat
in Brum,  She had returned from Rome for the last days
and subsequent funeral of our mother, why she didn't
return to Italy I'll never know. By now she was as low
in spirit as any-one can be and I felt helpless, with no
idea of how to get her out of the dark place she was in.
We were always the closest of all our family (9) and
closer still was our love of music, so, with my old
record player and a box set of the complete  Beethoven
string quartets I kept bashing on her front door until
she had to let me into her flat. She had a scowl on her
face that would have made the devil take a step back,
until she saw what I had brought her, I just said "the
answer's in there Sister" and left.
After a week or so she started visiting again and
told me I had saved her life, but when I told her opus
132, the third movement, was my favourite she chided me
saying it was the most vulgar/obvious/ simplest/ of all
the quartets but, stlll, today of all Beethovens works,
it leaves me in awe. I feel he has found peace, and being
Beethoven, it's a triumphant peace...

(bet the snides take it down...

p.s.. no, I wasn't bashing the door with the record player...

Ashes..

Best cricket summer I've ever known..but it ain't over yet.
As always (in the TMS box) there's an Aussie saying they
were cheated, no mention of what Ben has just done, or
Lyon dropping the ball.   Cooky  doesn't know where to look
and Aggers is pissing himself laughing...
